•Posted on March 29 2019
Adding a new supplement to your diet is exciting, but it may also be a little intimidating. If you've just purchased or are interested in purchasing our MSM powder, we hope you find this guide helpful.
Read on to find out how MSM is used for both health and beauty, possible risks, side effects and much more.
What is MSM Powder?
Methylsulfonylmethane or MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur compound that can be found in plants, animals, and humans. It can also be found in green vegetables and other food products or made as a supplement in a lab.
MSM comes in powder or capsule form. However, we only offer it in powder form. Our MSM, in particular, is manufactured as OptiMSM which is the purest and only GRAS-designated (Generally Recognized As Safe) MSM on the market.
What is MSM Used For?
Health and Beauty Benefits of MSM
MSM offers both beauty and health benefits with regular use.
The compound provides biologically active sulfur that is required for critical functions that occur within our bodies daily and help to maintain homeostasis.
This is why so many health and beauty benefits are attributed to MSM supplements. You can apply MSM topically to the skin as a lotion/gel or take it by mouth.
For What Conditions is MSM Helpful?
For Beauty:
- Hair Growth
- Nail Growth
- Collagen Production (prevents wrinkles, scarring, dark spots and sun damage)
- Skin Problems (Rosacea, allergies, eczema, acne)
- Stretch Marks
For Health:
- Chronic Joint Pain (Arthritis, Bursitis, Osteoarthritis)
- Bodily Inflammation
- Leaky Gut Syndrome and Autoimmune disorders
- Stress Adaption
- PMS Symptoms
- Yeast Infections
- Muscle Cramps
- High Blood Pressure
- Eye Inflammation
- Poor Circulation
- Oral Infections
What Are the Side Effects?
Side Effects of MSM Powder
Research doesn't show any serious side effects from supplementing with MSM, but below are possible symptoms you may experience when taking the supplement orally.
Common Side Effects Include:
- Abdominal discomfort
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
Other Side Effects Include:
- Swelling
- Fatigue
- Difficulty Concentrating
- Insomnia
- Headache
As for the side effects linked to topical use of MSM, if you experience any skin reactions, allergy related or otherwise, we recommend discontinuing use of the product.
Are There Any Risks?
Generally speaking, we always suggest advising your physician to better determine the risks and/or side effects you may personally experience when supplementing with MSM.
Because not enough research supports the safety of MSM during pregnancy or when breastfeeding, it's best to avoid using the supplement if you are or think you may be pregnant.
As for individuals who may be allergic to sulfa drugs, there have been no reports of MSM causing allergic reactions in those who are hypersensitive to sulfur-containing compounds, but again, we advise seeking the help of a healthcare professional to ensure your safety.
What is the Recommended Dosage for This Supplement?
How to Take MSM Powder
While there is no Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of MSM, effective amounts of MSM range from 1.5 to 6 grams.
We suggest taking 4 grams (1 teaspoon) of MSM per 100 pounds of your body weight. You will consume this amount twice a day, dissolved in water or juice if taking the supplement orally. You may take MSM with or between meals.
Do Any Drugs or Supplements Interact with MSM?
Fortunately, there are no listed drug interactions for MSM, but if you are currently taking any medication, we always suggest consulting with your physician first.
How Should I Store MSM?
To keep your MSM as fresh as possible, we recommend it be stored in a dry, relatively cool or room temperature setting.
Please be aware that MSM and other herbal supplements are not FDA approved for prevention or treatment of medical diseases or conditions. Speak with your doctor or other health care professional before using this product.
Bottom Line: Is MSM Right For You?
Deciding to take a new supplement is a completely personal choice. If you suffer from any of the health conditions listed above or you're simply looking for something to amp up your wellness arsenal, then MSM may be right for you.
But ultimately, you need to consider your medical and health history to ensure this product is a safe choice and is suitable for your needs.
Although there are many factors to consider when taking a new supplement, we hope this guide narrows things down for you.

@Liz: Twice a day is to ensure that the supplement is adequately absorbed. Your digestive system can only absorb so much at once depending on the mineral/vitamin, etc. so spacing out the dosage optimizes how much MSM your body actually takes in.
What is the reason msm needs to be taken twice a day? I have been unable to find it online anywhere. Is it just as beneficial taking it once a day?
@Elle: Hi there, yes you may add the powder to capsules and take it that way. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thank you!

Can you put the powder in capsules and swallow the capsule? I can’t take the taste and it gets harder to ingest because of the taste.
